THE BLT is the nation’s favourite sandwich, a poll has found.

Nearly 30 per cent of us love bacon, lettuce and tomato between two slices of bread.

The classic meat and salad sarnie combo can be traced back to an entry in Good Housekeeping Everyday cookbook in 1903.

But it became popular after World War Two with the rise of supermarkets.

It beat humble chicken salad into second with tuna mayo and fish fingers tied in third.

Meanwhile, 66 per cent love putting yesterday’s leftovers in a sarnie and a similar amount said any meal is better in bread.

Soft white is the nation’s No 1 loaf with 53 per cent of us, followed by wholemeal on 30 per cent and seeded on 22.

Most people — 85 per cent — cannot enjoy a sandwich without real butter, while 41 per cent swear by mayo and 14 per cent love to add hot sauce, the survey for Hovis found.

Adrian Mooney, of the baker, said: “There’s no doubt we’re a nation of sandwich lovers. We were delighted to see the classic BLT has stood the test of time.”

In 2022, a former royal chef revealed the Queen's favourite sandwich - and she's been having it for more than nine decades.

After serving the Royals for 15 years, Darren McGrady has since turned to social media to share some of the insights.

He said: "The Queen was served jam pennies in the nursery as a little girl, she’s had them for afternoon tea ever since."

He continued: "Simple, just bread and jam with a little butter - usually strawberry jam.

''We’d make the jam at Balmoral Castle with the gorgeous Scottish strawberries from the gardens."
