A COMMON tyre issue could be costing you hundreds of pounds but there is a simple fix to the problem.

Driving a car responsibly means not only following the road rules, but also making sure your vehicle is road-worthy to keep everyone safe.

Tyres are a key part of this because they are the point where the rubber meets the road and anything that affects them will affect the driver.

Wrongly inflated tyres can also make your motor drive less efficiently and therefore cost you more money.

Underinflation can reduce a vehicle's fuel efficiency by 10 per cent, costing the average family about £100 a year.

Data released by NimbleFins says the average motorist spends around £1,095 a year on petrol.

Those who are driving more often could be losing hundreds of pounds having to fork out more.

If a driver's tyres are underinflated by more, the driver will be getting less efficiency from their vehicle and losing more money.

A poll of 1,000 motorists commissioned by Apollo Tyres found that only 15 percent of road users check their tyre pressures weekly.

Experts at CarShop told Express: “Making sure your tyres have the correct pressure is important for your safety whilst on the road, but this isn't the only benefit as underinflated or overinflated tyres waste fuel.

"Research shows that if tyres are under-inflated can decrease a car's fuel efficiency by up to 10 percent, making the average tank of fuel do 36 miles per gallon.

“This decrease in fuel efficiency could see significant increases in the amount of fuel a person has to purchase, increasing their fuel spend every year."

I’m an expert car mechanic… premium fuel can be expensive but there’s a reason why I recommend it

One garage in Wales checked the tyre pressure of 100 random cars in a month last year and found over half of the cars had underinflated tyres.

Out of all the cars they tested, 72 of them had tyres not properly inflated and 22 had all four tyres inflated to the wrong pressure.

Driving with underinflated tyres is dangerous and can result in the tyre rubbing wrongly on the road and it wearing through prematurely.

It can also lead to overheating and the sidewall of the tyre could blow making the driver lose control in the worst cases.

Tyres will gradually lose air over time and hitting curbs, potholes and tiny punctures can all see pressure loss faster.

Motorists should check their tyre pressure once a month and before making long journeys or carrying heavy loads.

They can find the correct level for each tyre's pressure in the manual and on a sticker on the driver's door frame (only visible when the door is opened).

UK’s cheapest petrol station revealed… as major supermarket claims top spot for best fuel deals

FUEL prices have risen continuously over the last few years but motorists could now save at least £3 a tank by filling up at one petrol station.

Morrisons can boast the lowest prices for fuel, according to the RAC Foundation from data released in January.

Major supermarket Morrisons charges an average of 136.9p a litre for petrol and just 145.5p for diesel, data showed.

In stark comparison, the most expensive fuel retailer was Shell, who charged 142.6p a litre for petrol and 151.2p for diesel.

Re-fuelling a 55-litre family petrol car is usually at least £3 cheaper at Morrisons than Shell, according to the figures.

BP was ranked the second most expensive, charging an average of 140.8p per litre for petrol.
