Arbor Day Foundation Free Tree Seedlings

What are the 10 free trees from Arbor Day?

You will have trees suited to your region of the country. For example, I will receive 2 flowering crabapples, 3 eastern redbuds, 2 Washington hawthorns, and 3 white flowering dogwoods plus 2 crapemyrtles. And, my Hip Sidekick Paige will receive 5 flowering trees, 5 Norway spruce trees, and 2 lilac bushes. Your selection will depend on where you live and your climate!

The trees will be sent at the right time for planting in your area this spring and substitutions for the types of trees may apply as quantities are limited. Note that different regions have different deadlines to order for this year based on your area’s planting season so be sure to order before it’s too late!

Wow I love this!! Remember they say “The best time to plant a tree is 20 years ago. The second best time is now.”

  6. JL

I donated $10 but don’t see anywhere about what shrubs/trees we will receive. Will it be an email?

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Hi there! It looks like once you complete the questionaire about your area, and then head to the form where you select your donation options, you’ll see the selections you will be receiving, just above where you add your address. Hoping that helps! πŸ₯°

***Arbor day is a scam!!!! Last year I donated and 3 months later they sent me an apology stating that they did not have any of the trees that I wanted so they sent me all the same 10 basic trees. But heres the kicker, all 10 so called trees were dried up twigs. They could have at least sent me stems that had a chance of growing.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh bummer! SO sorry to hear the issues with ordering your trees last year. Thanks so much for the heads up on your experience. Were you able to contact them again about the state of the trees you did receive? I did find this in their FAQ if that might be helpful. ❀️❀️

“Your trees are guaranteed to arrive in a good, healthy condition or we’ll replace them at no charge. Our tree seedlings are shipped as dormant bare root seedlings at a suitable time for planting. This means that they are still in their hibernating state from the winter months. Deciduous trees will generally be delivered leafless with a few swollen buds, while Conifers will have needles. To confirm that the trees are alive, lightly scratch the seedling with your thumb nail. This should reveal a living layer of green tissue…your assurance that the seedlings are alive and ready to be planted.”

I did this last year! Because I live in a hot climate (south Texas), I received my tree babies during the winter. After following the instructions to plant them together in the yard, all but 1 has survived and is thriving in the spring temperatures. I was very skeptical since it took so long to receive them, and they were so tiny when they arrived. Just know that they are very small babies when they arrive, and you will need to grow them in a controlled area. I think this is a worthwhile expense for future trees in our yard, but it will be years until they look like trees.

    • Amber (Hip Sidekick)

Oh wow! Thank you so much for explaining the process and how they can take some time to fully mature. Glad that most all of them have survived! πŸ™ŒπŸ’•

  9. B

Please research what you are getting. I ordered this 15 years ago. I ended up with 6 of the 10 trees that had large thorns. I wish I had never planted these trees. My husband hated mowing near these trees. Not kid friendly trees.

  10. Ali Sand

I started filling this out but in the last step, it says trees will begin shipping November 1. That is totally pointless for planting here. Too bad.

    • Jessica (Hip Sidekick)

Hey Ali! I did find these details in their FAQ on shipment schedules – “To be sure that your trees arrive in a strong and healthy condition, we ship bare root stock only when it is dormant in the fall and spring seasons. Trees are sent according to your local climate and this year’s weather.

Fall Shipping: We have to wait for a couple of hard frosts so the trees go dormant and can be shipped safely. Trees can be planted until the ground is frozen solid. Fall shipments are made between November 1 and December 10.

Spring Shipping: Our trees can be planted during a broad range of weeks or months – from when the frost first leaves the ground through late spring. Spring shipments are made between February 26 and May 30. Please see our shipping schedule.”

There’s also a helpful section about tree planting and care, if this may be helpful! ❀️
