A £1 CAN is a surprisingly helpful item when cleaning your car's seats and keeping them stain-free - with thousands already owning it.

Cleaning your car is time consuming and often involves a lot of elbow grease and bending over into difficult to reach places.

It also can involve a lot of equipment like a vacuum, cleaning chemicals, and a bucket of water and cloth.

But one product many drivers will already have at home can help get the inside of your motor gleaming in no time.

Shaving foam or shaving gel can be sprayed onto upholstery and then the cleaner can scrub the fabric with a towel or brush.

After wiping away the remaining foam and giving the upholstery a vacuum, the seat should look as good as new.

Another great thing about shaving foam is it is also cheap - selling at Boots for only £1.

Shaving foam works at cleaning upholstery because the foam breaks down grease and other dirt that clings to carpet fibers.

Fans of the hack said they wished they had known about it.

One said: "Uhmm ok I’m a car detailer why did I not know this??"

While a second wrote: "When ur seats is so dark u clean it it comes out a different color seat."

While a third posted: "Shaving cream works on everything!! I love shaving cream for cleaning!"

Another surprising product many will have at home which can be used for cleaning is olive oil.

The cooking liquid is effective at cleaning dust that collects on the dashboard and will leave it sparkling.

Toothpaste can also be used as a car cleaner and can be picked up for as little a 50p in Boots, with travel-sized variants likely even cheaper.

Of course, virtually all households across the country will probably have a tube or two lying around in a bathroom cupboard already - which means drivers have an affordable car cleaning alternative ready to hand.

According to our motoring buffs, the mild abrasive properties in toothpaste can help to remove surface stains on your car's headlights.
