CORONATION Street has begun the controversial new Toyah Battersby storyline tonight.

The counsellor - who is played by actress Georgia Taylor in the ITV soap - had a meltdown in tonight’s episode at a park.

She had gone looking for Roy Cropper’s dog Freddie was kidnapped by ghouls trying to force him into confessing to the murder of Lauren Bolton.

Viewers know that Roy didn’t kill Lauren and yet he has been arrested and charged by the bungling Weatherfield police.

After Sam raised the alarm of Freddie being taken while he was walking him, Roy’s pals assembled and headed to the park to search.

But when Toyah came across a group ready to dig up a spot where Freddie had been spotted digging, she lost it.

She grabbed one of the men’s shovels before smashing his car windows and seeing them off.

Later after being arrested Toyah was furiously trying to blame the men for her overreaction.

And later still, after lashing out at her own family, Toyah went and bought a yellow rose before returning to the park under cover of darkness.

The scenes mark the beginning of the controversial storying that will see viewers learn Toyah buried a stillborn tot in a park after being raped in 2001.

A source said: “Aside from the fact that viewers want entertainment, this is still an incredibly dark and ambitious storyline, and some longtime fans may decide to pick apart the holes.

“It all played out on screen, the brutal attack, the aftermath, so for it to now transpire that she became pregnant from the rape, suffered a stillbirth all alone before burying her dead baby at The Red Rec has raised quite a few eyebrows on set. It’s not going to go down well.”
