CKFC Track Nears Completion

NAVAL BASE GUAM (March 25, 2024) – Repair and restoration of the Charles King Fitness Center (CKFC) running track are nearing completion. A team of construction workers started laying down the first layer of polyurethane and black rubber granules on March 15 and completed the second layer on March 22. Additionally, the scoreboard was replaced and is now operational.

NAVAL BASE GUAM (March 25, 2024) – Repair and restoration of the Charles King Fitness Center (CKFC) running track are nearing completion. A team of construction workers started laying down the first layer of polyurethane and black rubber granules on March 15 and completed the second layer on March 22. Additionally, the scoreboard was replaced and is now operational.

Construction crews require two more layers of rubber granules and polyurethane with weather permitting. The track is anticipated to reopen for public use by the end of April once the final layers have completely cured.

The track closed in January 2021, after a safety inspection deemed the track unsafe due to numerous large bubbles on the running surface that posed tripping hazards. After several delays, the $4.9 million contract was re-awarded in August 2023 to fix the running track and scoreboard.

The scope of work included removal of existing track, repair of the aggregate base course and drainage, new asphalt pavement, a new synthetic surfacing system, and a new electronic wireless LED scoreboard.

While the track and field remain closed for safety reasons, patrons are encouraged to utilize other areas including the scenic route on Sumay Cove Marina Circle near Clipper’s Point, and the Road Leading to San Luis Beach.

The Orote Point Airfield is also a safe alternative for runners and walkers. The airstrip is permitted for use during daylight hours, as long as flight or training operations are not being conducted. Additionally, CKFC offers an array of cardio equipment for active recovery including assault bikes, rowers, Ski-Ergs, Self-Powered Drive treadmills and more.
The NBG Safety Office encourages all joggers and walkers to be safe while exercising outdoors with the following safety tips and policies:
- Run during daylight hours, if possible.
- After sunset, runners must wear reflective clothing or luminescent devices on the installation.
- Stay on the sidewalk or shoulder of a road, if possible.
- Run facing oncoming cars.
- Always yield to vehicles at intersections.
- Obey all traffic rules and signals.
- Dress for the weather and stay hydrated.
- Runners shall not wear headphones while jogging on the installation, unless on a running path or sidewalk.
