Letter: Sen. Lee and many of his Republican colleagues clearly don’t want to fix our immigration system

Sen. Lee continually refuses to actually govern. Why on earth do Utahns keep electing him?

(Senate Television via AP) In this image from video from Senate Television, Sen. Mike Lee, R-Utah, speaks during the impeachment trial of Homeland Security Secretary Alejandro Mayorkas on the Senate floor at the U.S. Capitol, Wednesday, April 17, 2024, in Washington.

Our southern border is overstressed, and our immigration system is broken. Only Congress can change the laws that govern our immigration system, and appropriate the funding necessary to implement those laws.

Recently, a group of bipartisan senators spent months negotiating the toughest immigration bill in decades, that would have had a real impact on creating a more functional immigration system. But due to the fact that former President Donald Trump wants to keep immigration alive as an election issue, Sen. Mike Lee and many of his Republican colleagues killed the bill. They clearly don’t want to attempt to fix the problem.

Instead, they pursued a sham impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Mayorkas, trying desperately to somehow turn policy disagreements over the administration of a broken system into “high crimes and misdemeanors.” Thankfully, that effort was quelled quickly by Senate Democrats. Never have so many expended so much energy to get so little done. Sen. Lee continually refuses to actually govern. So why does he want to stay in the Senate? And why on earth do Utahns keep electing him?
