EXCLUSIVEBritain's bravest mother who was critically injured after she pushed her baby's pram out of the way of hit-and-run driver walks to London Marathon finish line to meet her 'hero' husband with a hug and a kiss as he completes 26.2-mile course

Britain's bravest mum, who was left critically injured after pushing her baby daughter out of the path of a hit-and-run driver, has hailed her husband as 'my hero' after he ran the London Marathon to raise funds for her favourite charity.

Becky Sharp walked to the finishing line to greet husband Dan with a hug and a kiss when he was among the thousands of runners to complete the 26.2-mile course.

He decided to take part in the gruelling event for the first time having been 'inspired' by his wife's recovery from life-changing injuries.

The mother-of-three was herself acclaimed as a hero when she pushed her 11-month-old daughter's pram to safety before she was hit by a drink driver in Bournemouth in April last year.

Becky was thrown 'like a rag doll' through the air and landed over 20 yards away when she was struck at 40mph.

She spent two months in a coma and suffered injuries to her head, pelvis and leg.

After months of intensive physiotherapy Becky is now able to walk again and together with her family greeted 40-year-old Dan as he crossed the finishing line.

Becky said: 'I'm so proud of Dan, he is my hero. It makes me so pleased to see him complete the London Marathon after all the hard training he has put in.'

Dan said: 'To complete the London Marathon feels like the end of a terrible year in which Becky was so badly injured.

'It is very emotional to be here today with Becky and Lorena and to be able to raise some money for Brain Research UK.'

Dan ran the London Marathon alongside Becky's brother Rob Higgin and his friend Ross MacLeod to raise money for Brain Research UK.

They set themselves an initial target of £2,000 but such has been the response to their appeal they have raised more than £18,500.

Dan has told how he was 'inspired' to compete by his wife's resilience and stated any physical pain he suffered from running the 26-mile road race was 'no big deal' compared to Becky's challenges.

The RNLI manager said: 'Running a marathon is not much of a big deal compared to what Becky has been through.

'She has worked really hard with her rehab and can now walk the girls to school - she is an inspiration.

'We're able to raise money for Brain Research UK so it's a double benefit because I'm doing what I was planning to do before and then also being able to benefit the charity and hopefully improve the outcomes for people with brain injuries.'

He explained: 'I had trained for the Manchester Marathon last year and was due to run it four days after Becky got hit.

'I did all the training for it and now I get to run it in London, which is a huge deal.'

He went on to describe his wife as 'doing really well' after moving back home at the start of last December with a support package in place.

Dan added: 'Support workers come to help her with day-to-day things in her recovery.

'With traumatic injuries it is a lottery so we are really lucky that all her limbs function.'

Helena Davies, from Brain Research UK, said the money raised would go towards funding research projects.

She said: 'It's been such a privilege to be part of Becky's story and we are in awe of her determination and strength.

'The awareness that they have been spreading is incredible as well, it's just as important as the fundraising.'

Scaffolder Dale Clark had been on a two-day vodka and cocaine binge when he collided with Becky on the morning of April 11 last year.

The mother-of-three had dropped her two older daughters at school and was pushing her 11-month old baby daughter Lorena home.

Clark, 38, from New Milton in Hampshire, was jailed for three years and eight months after admitting causing serious injury by dangerous driving, failing to stop at the scene of an accident and drink driving.
