At least two people are dead, and six others injured in a shooting in Memphis, Tennessee, according to US police.

The incident occurred at a street party in the city, with clips on social media showing panic after shots appear to ring out.

Police said that both the fatalities were males and one of the victims was in critical condition. Another of the victims has already been released from hospital, police added.

The Memphis Police Department initially said there were 16 victims including the two men who were killed, but later revised the number, saying it was an "error" likely caused by "several victims being reported multiple times".

Police added the incident happened at "a block party that was occurring without a permit" with between 200-300 people in attendance.

At least two suspects are being sought, CBS News reported, citing Memphis Police interim chief Cerelyn Davis.

"We believe there are at least two individuals that fired weapons during this incident," Ms Davis told CBS News.
