Britain’s Got Talent 2024 LIVE — Sydnie Christmas lands first golden buzzer as burping act grosses out Bruno

THE new season of Britain’s Got Talent started this weekend, and the ITV show made a chaotic return.

In just the first episode, two acts were already awarded golden buzzers, meaning they will automatically make it through to the semi-finals.

However, this infuriated some fans, as one of the contestants was revealed to be a professional performer.

Judges raved over Sydnie's heartfelt performance of Tomorrow from Annie the musical, but viewers later discovered that she has a stage background.

Meanwhile, one of the judges was left peeved by a "disgusting" act that made her storm off-set.

Alesha Dixon walked away from BGT after watching American Kimberly Winter burp her way through Winner Takes It All by ABBA, and tried to take Bruno Tonioli with her.

Britain’s Got Talent returns next Sunday at 7.40pm on ITV1 and ITVX.

  • Some fans already have their winner

Fans are already tipping Sydnie Christmas to win this year’s series.

This comes after she earned Amanda Holden’s Golden Buzzer with a stunning performance of Tomorrow in last night’s episode.

One commented on X: “Sydnie. Winner right there.”

Another said: “Sydnie Christmas was phenomenal. Not often I want a golden buzzer so much!”

A third wrote: “Haven’t watched #BGT in ages, but just happened to turn the TV on right as a girl called #Sydnie was singing, what a brilliant performance full of emotion but also control, nailed it!”

A fourth shared: “Yes! Well deserved Sydnie! Absolute goosebumps and never heard that song performed better than that.”

  • What time is Britain’s Got Talent on tonight?

Britain’s Got Talent is back for another explosive episode tonight.

The second episode of this year’s series takes to ITV at 7:40pm tonight.

If you missed last night’s action, head over to ITVX now to stream the series.

  • Ant admitted he felt faint after watching one performance

The last act of last night performed a breathtaking taekwondo routine while hitting and breaking blocks of wood.

Presenting duo Ant and Dec were both blown away by the South Korean martial arts group, and ran on stage to award them a golden buzzer.

After watching the whole performance from the wings, Dec gasped: “I’ve never felt so alive.”

Ant shared the sentiment, adding: “I feel faint, and I didn’t even do anything.”

  • Viewers ‘switch off’ over use of AI

Several fans have admitted to turning the talent show off after the very first act disturbed them.

In it a singing troupe took to the stage to harmonise their way through a musical – with a shock twist.

Each member had a camera in front of their face, and they used the tech to project the faces of the judges onto a big screen.

This made it appear as if the judges were the ones performing the quartet.

The panel found this hilarious, but audience members at home have shared more negative takes on social media.

One person groaned: “Remembering the days of BGT where we had Diversity and Susan Boyle and now you’ve got AI and the judges giving it the same level of praise as them.”

Another hit out: “How is this AI s**t talent???? Absolute C**P!”

  • Who is Viggo Venn?

Viggo Venn is a comedian, who hails from Norway.

He is well known on the comedy circuit, and can often be found performing in London pubs and clubs.

The Norwegian won the public vote in the semi-final with his very unique act, which involved him recording the judges saying their names, while wearing his iconic hi-vis jacket.

Alesha branded him “best act of the night”, while Simon confessed: “It was the most annoying act of the night, but also my favourite.”

His final performance finally saw him get Simon to wear a hi-vis jacket and he declared he had won over the head judge’s heart.

  • Who are the Britain’s Got Talent judges and hosts?

Owner and founder of the show Simon Cowell is once again the judge of the show alongside Alesha Dixon and Amanda Holden with Bruno Tonioli joining the stellar panel.

Ant and Dec, who only waved goodbye to their Saturday Night Takeaway this month, will also return for the 17th season of the ITV show.

  • Bruno Tonioli insists he will never retire

The new BGT judge previously assessed celebrities on Strictly Come Dancing.

Despite having worked in showbiz for 15 years now, he says he has no plans to ever quit.

He told the Sun: “If I drop dead I will drop dead on stage. I love what I do. I always had this dream since I was a kid and what has happened is beyond what I could have ever dreamed of.

“Obviously I had to work very hard, I had to teach myself languages, but still being here, still working in the UK, still working in Hollywood. It’s like, ‘Wow! It’s meant to be’.”

  • Bruno Tonioli has made a subtle swipe at his fellow judges

The flamboyant Italian joined the ITV show last year.

After watching back the opening episode of BGT he joked that he is the only person on the panel whose face moves.

The 68-year-old shared: “I went into the bathroom and looked in the mirror and said, ‘Bloody hell, I am the only person with wrinkles’.

“I do my thing but I haven’t done Botox yet. I will now. There’s nothing wrong with it if it makes you look better on screen, I’m not commenting on that.

“I think I could do with a bit. I’m very expressive, so I’m not sure if I could cope if I couldn’t move my face.

“But you have choices. I’m not one to criticise people’s choices.”

  • One performer said their students were tougher to impress than Simon Cowell

Mike Woodhams amazed the judges with his celebrity impressions – and joked that the kids he teach are a tougher audience.

The educator from Milton Keynes successfully impersonated James Blunt and Macy Gray down to the hand gestures while belting out some of their most famous hits.

  • Viewers hit out at contestants being allowed to return

Dog trainer Lucy Heath is trying her luck on BGT for the third time after making it to the final on her second try.

Some people have complained that this is unfair and she is robbing new talent of their chance to win.

One took to social media fuming: “Why is she allowed back on when she made it to the final in 2016?! Sorry but this show is an absolute joke nowadays.”

Another chimed in: “If you’ve been on before and made it to the final you shouldn’t be allowed to go back on in my opinion. Just possibly taking that spot away from someone else who hasn’t had a chance before.”

  • Simon believes you do not need to win anymore to become a household name

Speaking last year head judge Simon Cowell said he doesn’t believe you even need to win the contest anymore to become a household name.

He said: “Where things have changed a lot from where we started is it always used to be about the end prize.

“Now a good audition that goes viral can open so many doors, that’s what makes us stand out from other shows.

“I really like it when someone’s brilliant and they’ve got a regular day job, because that adds an extra level to what they’re doing and has people talk about the act afterwards.

“I learned that when Susan Boyle was on the show.”

  • Where is Lagi Andreas now?

Michalakis 'Lagi' Andreas soared to fame in 2009 alongside his father as the duo Stavros Flatley at the age of 13.

The pair finished fourth behind Susan Boyle and the eventual winner, dance group Diversity.

Following their stint on the show, they appeared on ITV's Sugar Free Farm, where celebrity contestants were challenged to take on a sugar-free diet.

He married his wife Annika in 2022 in a lavish ceremony in Cyprus - that same year, they welcomed their first child, a daughter called Xenia.

Comprised of individuals aged between 5 and 37, the group welcomes anyone no matter their experience or background.

Chicken Shed prides itself on accepting anyone and does not hold auditions in order to make the group a safe and inclusive space.

The golden buzzer is on the judges’ panel which, when pressed, means you are automatically granted a place in the semi-finals.

This will mean they will skip past the boot camp stage of the competition, ultimately giving them a head start.

However, some felt awarding her the Golden Buzzer was unfair after finding out she has starred in Starlight Express in Bochum, Germany, and Lazarus at London's King's Cross Theatre.

One wrote on X: "No way. She’s either got an album out already or has been signed somewhere. Sydnie is pro already I reckon."
