Reddit user Practical-Werewolf61 shared how they saved their flower beds from grass in the yard.

They revealed before and after images of how their yard looked in a group focused on gardening, plants, and all things agriculture.

After two years of trying to stop the grass from growing into their flower beds, they finally decided to take matters into their own hands because "enough was enough."

In the before photo, the flower garden was on a sloping hill to the side of their house.

The plants were spaced apart, showcasing the dirt and mulch around them.

Small stones laid around the border originally separated it from the grass.

"Initially, I dug a very small trench and filled it with white rocks with no edging as in the Before picture," they explained.

Although it was a valiant effort, it didn't stop the grass from spreading into the mulch.

Soon after, they finally decided to "take the plunge" and built a "retaining semi-wall structure."

In the after image, there are more trees than blooming, colorful plants this time around.

"I still haven't planted any flowers, still have some growing back," they admitted.

The red ones, in particular, are taking a while to crop up again.

The whole process wasn't long and only took four days to get the job done.

Many people had their worries about whether or not the renovation would work.

"Looks very lovely and adds to the house!!! I would have done it despite reality and it's kudos to you," one began.

"Now some reality: I have a raised bed just like this. Grass still gets in the bed (grass seed unfortunately floats in on the wind). I just pulled a bunch. Not only that, over time it also tries to grow in between the stones which I also remove year after year."

"Sorry in advance if the grass still gets in," another commented.

"No problem, it won't. I added edging along the entire trench. Plus I am a half-glass-full type of individual so I am positive that it won't get in," the Reddit user replied.

  1. Banana peels, vinegar, and coffee grounds are often recommended as natural fertilizers.
  2. Dollar Tree sells four packs of seeds for $1.25.
  3. Try a vertical planter like Amazon's Mr. Stacky 5 Tier Stackable Planter, $35 to make more use of a small space.
  4. Use netting like the Garden Netting Pest Barrier, $8, from Amazon to keep away bugs that eat your vegetables.
  5. Try sacrificial planting to reduce the use of pesticides and keep pests away from your garden. Deliberately growing certain plants to attract agricultural pests can keep them away from the plants you want to protect. Examples include marigolds, lavender, catnip, and chives.
  6. For pesky weeds in your garden, the Grampa's Weeder - The Original Stand-Up Weed Puller Tool with Long Handles, $45, from Amazon is a helpful tool you can use without having to bend over.

They also mentioned in another comment that they put six-inch plastic edging in the trench towards the grassy side.

It was meant to prevent grass from growing into the stone blocks at least.
