A FORMER Major League Baseball prospect has died in a car crash at age 24.

Ronny Garcia played for the Houston Astros in the minor leagues from 2017 to 2013.

The former prospect was a relief pitcher who represented the Astros in various leagues.

He died in a traffic accident in Samana, Dominican Republic on Saturday.

Garcia was with his dad, who also died, according to MLB Insider Hector Gomez.

El Tiempo reported that a third person also died in the tragic accident.

The crash was between two motorcycles on the Las Galeras-Samana highway, the report added.

The Astros released a short statement on Facebook on Saturday morning.

It read, "We are deeply saddened by the passing of former Astros prospect, Ronny Garcia.

"Our condolences go out to his family and friends."

Garcia was on the Astros' books for seven years in all.

He had three seasons in the Dominican Summer League affiliates and moved to the US in 2021.

Garcia played in both the Florida Complex League and Class-A Fayetteville in 2021 and 2022.

The pitcher had a 9-15 record in his outings over seven years with the Astros' minor league teams.

Over his career, he posted a 3.42 ERA over 122 games and 186.2 innings pitched.

Garcia allowed 170 hits, 100 walks, and eight home runs - and he struck out 200 batters.

He signed up to play for The York Revolution for the 2024 season in February.

"We are saddened to learn of the passing of Ronny García," wrote the Fayetteville Woodpeckers, a Carolina League team and Astros affiliate, said in a statement.

"Ronny spent parts of three seasons with Fayetteville, always carrying a smile around the ballpark.

"He was a talented pitcher and a beloved teammate.

"Our thoughts are with his family during this difficult time."
