Depreciation has driven down the price of used cars in the UK, which mean ordinary punters can now afford prestige motors which could spark envious glances from pals, neighbours and colleagues.

The list includes monster motors driven by the rich and famous, but could be yours for under £5,000.

Starting the list at number ten is the XJ, which showcases a 2.7 litre twin turbo diesel v6 engine.

While once associated with the golf club captains and Arthur Daley type businessmen, the Jaguar is still a famous British export.

This big beast will move from zero to sixty in around 7.8 seconds.

Johnny points out that the motor , despite looking at bit dated now, comes with some fairly advanced technical kit for its age.

But JB is not a fan of the interior which he labels as "hundred per cent Grandad armchair spec."

Alfa Romeo 159

Unsurprisingly JB is a huge fan of Alfa which he describes as one of his favourite manufacturers.

The sexy Italian brand is adored by petrolheads around the world.

JB points out that the 159 was designed by the man behind the Lotus Esprit, DeLorean and the legendary Ferrari 250 GT.

‘Incredibly powerful’ motors for less than £10k - including luxury Lexus

He explains that a bottom-end 159 will go for just £1,000 with a 2008 version going for around £5,000 with around 75,000 miles on the clock.

On the downside, he points out that the cambelt needs to be changed after 60,000 miles.

If you want to feel like an Italian playboy for a bit, this is the car for you.

Another big hitter, the S320 features a three-litre turbo diesel v6 engine under the hood.

The big Merc will do zero to sixty in just 7.3 seconds which is not bad for a heavyweight saloon.

The S320, once used by executives and government types around the world, could be parked up on your drive for less than £5,000.

However, JB points out that the S320 can come with electrical issues, due to the tech that was packed into them.

Their big limo, launched in 2002, was envisaged by VW to compete with German rivals such as the Merc S-Class, Audi A8 and BMW 7 Series.

The VW sits on the same platform as a Bentley Continental GT, and features a 3-litre turbo diesel engine.

Johnny admits that the Phaeton is one of his personal favourites.

JB said: "For around five grand you are looking at around a hundred
thousand miles-ish on the clock."

JB explained that the main teething issues concern the electrics.

Launched 20 years ago the Cayenne was a speculative move by Porsche into the lucrative SUV market.

JB reminds us that Porsche purists were not so keen on the Cayenne when it first rolled off the production line.

However, over time, the SUV appears to have been accepted even by the aficionados, as well as school-run mums around the world.

Again JB reminds us that older models can come with technical problems, such as leaking coolant pipes and some transmission issues.

JB said: "Around four thousand pounds at the bottom ends and for five grand you're looking at around a hundred thousand
miles on the clock."
