CALDWELL COUNTY, Ky. (WIAT) — Police are searching for a man whose car was found abandoned in Dawson Springs, Kentucky, approximately four hours away from where he was last seen near his home in Florence weeks ago.

Roy Foster Jackson, 83, was last seen April 7 near his home in Florence, the Caldwell County (Kentucky) Sheriff’s Office reported in a Facebook post. On Monday, Jackson’s car was found abandoned in a field next to the Trusty Cemetery in Dawson Springs. Over the next three days, an extensive search was organized to look for him in the area. As of Friday afternoon, Jackson has still not been found.

Lt. James Distefano of the Lauderdale County Sheriff’s Office in north Alabama said the department was made aware of Jackson’s disappearance after Kentucky police ran his car tag back to Alabama. Deputies then did a welfare check at Jackson’s home in Florence but did not find him.

Distefano said through Jackson’s sister, whom is believed to be his only next of kin, deputies learned that Jackson suffers from dementia, is diabetic and had not been heard from in several days leading up to his car being found.

“They feel like he started driving, got turned around and didn’t know what he was doing,” Distefano said.

An investigation into his journey from Florence to Dawson Springs revealed Jackson had made his way through Nashville at one point during his drive. Jackson’s last credit card activity was found in Russellville, Kentucky, roughly an hour away from where his car was ultimately found.

Anyone with information on Jackson’s location is encouraged to call the Caldwell County Sheriff’s Office at 270-365-2088 or the Dispatch Center non-emergency line at 270-365-2041.
