A Dutch man fought against a Sars-CoV-2 infection for 631 days until he passed away, as reported by Der Spiegel. His weakened immune system, due to therapy, prevented him from getting rid of the virus. Doctors are reporting on his case, which is being presented at the “ESCMID Global Congress” in Barcelona.

The 72-year-old suffered from a myelodysplastic/myeloproliferative syndrome and underwent a stem cell transplant as well as treatment for lymphoma, further weakening his immune defenses. Despite being vaccinated multiple times, he showed no measurable antibody response.

The Omicron variant BA.1.17 infected him in February 2022, and despite various therapies, he remained positive. Over time, the virus developed more than 50 mutations, allowing it to evade immune responses.
