FORT LEONARD WOOD, Mo. — At 11 p.m. Nov. 11, 1918 — the 11th hour, of the 11th day, of the 11th month — World War I came to an end. This Saturday, we will observe Veterans Day to honor all our military veterans, past and present. The men and women who answer the call to service are the finest our nation has to offer. Use this extended weekend as an opportunity to spend time with the veterans in your life; engage in community events and enjoy Missouri’s fall season. Prior to the holiday weekend, we expect every leader to talk with those in their care about their plans and about avoiding high-risk behaviors and preventable accidents.

With the on-going archery and firearm hunting seasons, ensure you emphasize the importance of hunting safety. If you plan to hunt, communicate with your families and teammates about where you’ll be, who you’ll be with, and when you expect to return. Be prepared for inclement weather by dressing in layers and waterproofing your clothes and equipment. Always remain disciplined in weapon safety; train on and follow federal, state and installation laws, regulations, policies, and procedures. Register firearms with the Directorate of Emergency Services prior to bringing them on post. When weapons are not in use, ensure they are safely stored and never handle weapons under the influence or impaired.

Missouri drivers have a 1 in 80 chance of colliding with an animal, according to the recent report which used 2022 Missouri State Highway Patrol and national statistics. Be vigilant as you drive and watch for increased wildlife movement on roadways, especially at dawn and dusk. Ensure vehicle headlights are on while it’s dark or when visibility is limited.

Whether on or off post, vehicular safety is key. 62% of Missouri’s roadway fatalities this year were not wearing a seatbelt; always buckle up and ensure all within your care do the same. Do not break the speed limit and lower speed, based on road, weather, and environmental conditions. Follow all traffic procedures and laws in school zones. Do not drive distracted or under the influence. Maintain supplies in the event of unexpected weather or driving situations.

Everyone at Fort Leonard Wood is an invaluable member of our team. We want each of you to return to duty safely after an enjoyable weekend with family and friends, celebrating the veterans in your life. We are very proud to serve with you!
