For 27 years, the Base Supply Store has served as Redstone’s go-to place for office supplies.

The store at building 3775 on Maintenance Row held its annual Customer Appreciation Day on April 9.

“This day is to show our customers how much we appreciate them supporting our mission to help the visually impaired to have jobs and buying the Skilcraft products which are made by visually impaired employees,” Dee Malone, the store manager, said.

The store is operated by the Alabama Industries for the Deaf and Blind, based in Talladega. It has seven employees, including Malone; and three are visually impaired. “I’m two visually impaired employees short,” she added.

Its hours are 8 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Monday through Friday. The store offers all office products. “If you don’t see it, ask for it – it doesn’t mean we can’t get it,” Malone said. For information call 256-382-1111.

Alabama Industries for the Deaf and Blind provides three stores in Alabama and two in Georgia. Besides Redstone, the Alabama locations include Anniston Army Depot and Fort Novosel, which was formerly named Fort Rucker. The Georgia locations include Robins Air Force Base and Moody AFB. Jeff Papalia is the executive director of Alabama Industries for the Deaf and Blind; and Susanne Willis is the sales and marketing director.

Detrich Hilleary visited the Redstone store on Customer Appreciation Day. Hilleary, a metrology electronics engineer at the Aviation and Missile Command’s Test Equipment and Instrument Support Program, has shopped there since joining the Redstone workforce in June 2022.

“I think it’s a great resource for the base, or the people that work here,” he said, “because during our daily work we run into items that we need. And it’s like a real convenience to pick up items from here.”

Also among the visitors was Carol Carter of the Logistics Readiness Center who serves as assistant contracting officer’s representative, to Ross Gagliano, for the Base Supply Store.

“I think it’s unique in the way that they have it displayed and laid out,” she said of the store. “And I can tell you the people that work here are really friendly as well.”
