HOHENFELS, Germany -- Soldiers, civilians and family members of U.S. Army Garrison Bavaria - Hohenfels have a new resource for exploring the surrounding countryside, courtesy of the County of Neumarkt.
For the first time ever, the county tourist office has produced an English language brochure specifically conceived for the military community members that highlights the many sightseeing opportunities available in Neumarkt County.
Neumarkt County Commissioner Willibald Gailler said the new trip planner was a symbol of the strong relationship between the county and the HMC, which he said he considers the county's 20th community.
The trip planner features a map illustrating local points of interests including castles, caves, monuments and museums. Short text blurbs offer insights into each location and include contact information and opening times.
New to this edition is a section on family friendly excursions, as well as information on public transportation systems, said Christine Riel of the Neumarkt Tourism Office, one of the designers of the brochure.
The trip planner also includes sections on cycling and hiking, history and culture, churches and cloisters, local festivals, and, of course, Bavarian beer.
"Part of making this a home for our Soldiers, civilians, and family members are getting them to get out and explore and enjoy this country," said Kathleen Aydt, USAG Bavaria deputy garrison commander. "This is critically important for our partnership (with the surrounding communities)."
The new brochure will be available through Army Community Service and Family and Morale, Welfare and Recreation offices and will also be included in the newcomer's package presented to all incoming Hohenfels community members.
"This is a great opportunity for our community members in the Neumarkt area to understand what's available outside the fence line and to better enhance relationships and gain a better understanding of the sights and sounds that are out there in the surrounding villages," said Mike Haney, HMC deputy manager.
"The quality of life is high in Neumarkt County," said Gailler, adding that he was pleased to be able to help provide a means for HMC members to leave the training area and get to know the county better.
"I'm a golfer, and I didn't realize there were so many golf courses throughout the area," said Haney, perusing the map. "I'm pretty excited with that."
