MANCHESTER CITY have CRASHED OUT of the Champions League at the quarter-final stage after Real Madrid were victorious on penalties.

The Treble winners were stunned early on after Rodrygo gave the visitors the lead.

Kevin de Bruyne's superb leveller at the near post late in the second half took the tie to extra time and then penalties, but it was the Spanish giants that progressed by winning the shootout.

City's defeat means that no English sides will be in the last-4 of the Champions League this season following Arsenal's exit to Bayern Munich earlier tonight.

  • That's all from the Etihad

And that's all from Manchester City in this season's Champions League.

There will be no defence of their first European title after Real Madrid somehow held firm in the second leg, eventually dispatching the Premier League leaders on penalties.

There's still silverware in the offing for Pep Guardiola's side though, and attention will quickly turn back to domestic matters when they face Chelsea in the FA Cup semi-final on Saturday.

We'll be at Wembley for every kick of that clash, and you should join us for live coverage too.

Until then, thanks for reading and goodnight.

  • Real set up Bayern reunion

Following tonight's spotkick success, Real Madrid have qualified for the semi-finals of the European Cup/Champions League for the 33rd time in the club’s history.

It is a record unmatched with the next-best being Bayern Munich with 21 appearances in such semi-finals.

And who do Los Blancos meet in the next round? They're old rivals from Germany.

  • Relieved Jude praises Real performance

An exhausted yet delighted and eloquent Jude Bellingham admitted he had nothing else left to give by the end of extra-time, but feel his team did a brilliant job in containing a rampant Manchester City.

It's a relief. You put so much into the game. I've played against City before and they snatch it away from you at the end, and I was pretty much dead on my feet. It's so difficult. They are continuously probing with the ball and move you around. Most teams would fall apart when City get on top, but we stood up really well.

  • The Real Madrid celebrations continue...

...and could well go on right through the night.

  • The final match stats

Manchester City were dominant in nearly every area, but in the end it counted for nothing as Real Madrid held their line, held their nerve, and won the tie.

  • A bad night for the Premier League

Arsenal and Manchester City have been going toe-to-toe in the Premier League title race all season, and many expected another match-up in the semi-finals of the Champions League.

But an hour before City crashed out of Europe on penalties, the Gunners had gone the same way after a 1-0 defeat in Munich.

It means that Bayern will face Real in the last four after PSG and Borussia Dortmund confirmed their places last night.

  • Antonio Rudiger scores!

Real Madrid have done it! Los Blancos are in the Champions League semi-finals!

Ederson went the right way for Antonio Rudiger's decisive penalty, but it was too accurate, too powerful, clipping the inside of the post and finding the net.

The Manchester City players drop to their knees as Carlo Ancelotti's charges find the energy that had evaded them for the last hour.

They race towards their fans at the other end of the Etihad, and the wild celebrations begin.

The reigning champions are out, but Real Madrid stride on in search of their 15th European title.

    120. The fourth official informs all inside the Etihad that there will be just 60 further seconds.

It's enough time for Doku to accelerate down the left wing, but when his cross rebounds off a defender, back against the Manchester City man and behind for a goalkick, the Real Madrid fans at that end can celebrate a job well done.

    Now to penalties.

  • Man City 1-1 Real Madrid (agg: 4-4)

  • Man City 1-1 Real Madrid (agg: 4-4)

    114. It's not so much that Manchester City have run out of ideas, more that they're absolutely shattered.

    110. Eder Militao is on in place of the departing Dani Carvajal, but it won't be the oncoming Brazilian who is required to deal with the lively Jeremy Doku.

Instead, it appears as though Real Madrid are going to switch to three at the back with another sub - Lucas Vazquez - playing as a right wing-back.

  • Man City 1-1 Real Madrid (agg: 4-4)

    108. Dani Carvajal hits the deck just as City were preparing for one final push.

The home crowd aren't happy, and TNT Sports commentator Darren Fletcher is desperate to talk about the 'dark arts', but it does look as though the right-back will have to be replaced.
