British politicians are planning to ban the sale of cigarettes, which is facing strong opposition both within and outside their own party, as reported by Der Spiegel.

The proposed legislation would incrementally raise the minimum age for purchasing cigarettes each year, with the aim of ensuring that no one turning 15 or younger in that year could ever legally acquire cigarettes.

While some Tory MPs might vote against the proposal, it is expected to ultimately be adopted since the Labour Party supports the draft. Nevertheless, anti-smoking groups caution that the tobacco lobby is attempting to undermine the plans.

Additionally, efforts are being made to reduce the incentive for young people to consume e-cigarettes by restricting sweet flavors and seeking to entirely prohibit disposable e-cigarettes.
