I made my friend cry by dissing her chosen baby name…she says I’ve ‘ruined’ it but she named him after a household item

The woman questioned whether she was being a 'jerk' for sharing her honest opinion

BABY names are totally subjective - what one person likes, another person may not.

And a woman who faced that very situation has told how she made her friend cry after supposedly "ruining" her choice of baby name.

In a post shared to Reddit, the woman in question, who admits that she's "pretty judgemental" when it comes to monikers, asked whether she was being a "jerk" about her friend's baby name choice.

She then explained how her friend is expecting her third child but isn't finding out the sex until birth, adding that her first two kids have "uncommon but recognisable nature names," so she expected it to be something "not too common, but not weird."

However, how mistaken she was....

After meeting up and chatting all things pregnancy and parenting, the woman asked whether she'd thought of a name yet.

She continued: "She then proceeded to tell me that she's 'so happy with the name, nobody else has a name like that, and it's super cool and different, and sounds like a surfer name.'"

The woman went on to say how she was "internally bracing" herself for what was to come, but nothing could've prepared her for the reply - 'Coaster.'

"I was sort of confused, so I wanted to clarify," she continued.

"Like…the mat you put glasses on to protect the table?"

However, she explained how her friend "looked really confused" and claimed she'd "never heard of that."

"I then put 'coaster' into Google and showed her," the woman explained.

I had a baby for another couple at 27 - it helped me buy a £400k house, I thought I'd never save enough to stop renting

"She got a bit defensive, and said that if she'd never heard of a coaster, then other people wouldn't either, so it probably wouldn't matter that much.

"I said 'no, literally everybody knows what a coaster is.' Honestly, I'm surprised she went through 30+ years of life without knowing what a coaster is, as everyone I know uses the word constantly."

Despite the revelation, she explained how her friend insisted the name was "cool" and was going to stick with it, but later that night she received a text from her pal's partner.

He informed her that the mum-to-be had been crying because she loved the name and felt like it'd now been "ruined" for her.

"I responded and said that someone else was going to make the association sooner or later, and it's better she knows what a coaster is before the kid is born," the woman explained.

"I haven't received a reply."

I don’t think I could have come up with a different response in the moment tbh! I would have been stunned. You have done the child a favour

The post has been flooded with comments, with many agreeing that the woman had done the right thing by pre-warning her.

"I don’t think I could have come up with a different response in the moment tbh! I would have been stunned. You have done the child a favour," wrote one.

A second quipped: "Her tables must have so many water rings."

A third commented: "I successfully talked my friend out of naming her kid Kiwi.

"Sometimes people just need to get out of the baby name bubble in their head and come to their senses."

Meanwhile, a fourth noted: "Oh good lord. She wants to name her kid COASTER??? That’s awful.

"How has she never heard of drink coasters? That’s so weird. I don’t think you’re in the wrong here at all.

"That kid is absolutely going to get teased mercilessly because it’s a ridiculous name."
