MIDSOMER Murders could very well face the axe, according to the bookies.

In a cryptic move, ITV decided to pull the second episode of the new series from the schedule.

The premiere episode of the 23rd instalment of the long-running mystery programme recently made its way onto the airwaves.

However, it seems that the broadcaster has chosen not to air the second episode of Midsomer Murders just yet.

The anticipated episode will not go live over the weekend and there is not confirmation when it will air as of the time of writing.

This has led to speculation that the broadcaster could look to permanently axe the show.

Although another series has been confirmed, after a mixed reception for the start of the new series the future beyond could be in doubt.

It stars the likes of former EastEnders star Annette Badland, Nick Hendrix, Fiona Dolman and Neil Dudgeon.

The Couple Next Door’s Kate Robbins and EastEnders alum Nina Wadia also joined the cast.

But according to betideas.com, the crime drama currently sits at odds of 8/11 to be cancelled after the new series went to air.

Lee Astley, spokesperson for betideas.com, said: "The new series of Midsomer Murders was met with a mixed reception last night.

"With no confirmed date for its second episode, it appears ITV could be losing patience with its long-running drama.

"Series 23, whenever it does resume, could well be the last one to hit our screens, with the show now just 8/11 to be canned after the latest season is aired."

He added: "Meanwhile, ITV bosses could look to keep hold of the show but instead give it a major revamp to appeal to new viewers, including a new cast, with Midsomer Murders 6/4 to receive a significant rebrand."

Sunday night’s episode of the popular crime drama kicked off series 23 of the long-running show.

But it has been pulled from the 8pm to 10pm slot which was occupied by Vera earlier this year.

Some viewers previously found the storyline of the episode to be 'far-fetched' as they took to social media to express their thoughts.

Taking to X - formerly Twitter - one fan wrote: "Nice easy Sunday night telly but a bit far-fetched."

"John Nettles made this show. When he finished it went downhill, still watchable but a difficult one, to be honest," stated a second.

Whilst a third added: "Don’t know why, but no matter how hard I try to like this show I can never get into it. Just bring back Vera."
