Tax Day 2024: H&R Block website having problems as filing deadline nears

.

Popular tax filing service H&R Block is experiencing outages with its computer software as the tax filing deadline is just hours away.

The federal income tax deadline for tax year 2023 is 11:59 p.m. on Monday. Users on social media reported error messages when attempting to file their returns to the Internal Revenue Service.

Downdetector shows users began reporting outages with the tax filing part of H&R Block’s online services at 9 p.m. EST on Sunday, with outage reports continuing into Monday and peaking around midday.

The company acknowledged the errors and problems with the website on Monday, noting that online clients and those working with tax professionals, in person and virtually, are not affected by the outage. H&R Block also recommended either waiting for the e-filing problems to be resolved or mailing a printed return to finish the tax process.

“We are working to resolve the issue quickly and ask clients to please try again later today or print and mail their return if that is more convenient,” the company said in a statement on X Monday morning.

The IRS’s tax filing window for tax year 2023 began in January, with Monday being the deadline for most of the country. Filers in Massachusetts and Maine have until Wednesday to file their 2023 federal income tax returns due to the Patriots’ Day holiday on Monday.

Monday is also the deadline for filers in various states to file their state income taxes for 2023. Nine states do not levy income tax, including Alaska, Florida, Nevada, New Hampshire, South Dakota, Tennessee, Texas, Washington, and Wyoming, but filers in those states must still file their federal income tax by Monday.
