FLORENCE, Ala. (WHNT) — Florence Police Chief Ron Tyler has announced he will be retiring after 12 years as chief and many more years with the department.

Tyler took to social media to announce his retirement, stating that he turned in his letter of resignation to the civil service board and Mayor Andy Betterton on Monday.

“It has been my greatest honor to serve with the men and women of the Florence Police Department,” Tyler said in the video.

Tyler said his last day at the department as chief will be June 28, although his official retirement date isn’t until after the beginning of next year.

“While we will miss him dearly, we are excited for him as he embarks on an exciting new chapter in his life and as we collectively look forward to the bright future of the Florence Police Department,” FPD said in a Facebook post sharing Tyler’s retirement announcement.

He was selected to become Chief of Police in May 2012, and was sworn in the following month.
