There’s an ongoing debate in Germany regarding the potential reinstatement of compulsory military or social service for young individuals, as reported by Tagesspiegel. Defense Minister Boris Pistorius is anticipated to propose policy adjustments soon.

Members of the SPD and the opposition CDU express readiness for discussions. Lars Klingbeil of the SPD voices support for the notion, emphasizing the importance of civic duty and offering both military and civilian service options. Klingbeil proposes school engagements with Bundeswehr personnel to enlighten students about service opportunities, stressing that it’s about career exploration and security awareness, not glorifying war.

However, he opposes reverting to the previous conscription model. The CDU suggests gradual reinstatement, considering the evolving security landscape. Florian Hahn, a prominent CDU figure, urges thorough preparation before any reintroduction, emphasizing it shouldn’t coerce youth but address security challenges. Meanwhile, the German Defense Minister highlights the nation’s readiness to enhance its role within NATO.

In Poland, discussions focus on reshaping the “active reserve” preparation approach.
