Southern Brazil is grappling with devastating floods, claiming over 100 lives and displacing more than 163,000 people. Heavy rains triggered the catastrophe in the state of Rio Grande do Sul, causing widespread destruction of infrastructure like highways and bridges, Barrons reported.

Residents in Porto Alegre, the state capital, are witnessing the Guaiba River overflowing, submerging streets and homes. The situation is dire, with at least 128 individuals still unaccounted for, urging the civil defense authority to issue evacuation warnings to those near the Patos lagoon.

Despite rescue efforts by both military and civilian groups, adverse weather conditions, including lightning storms and strong winds, forced authorities to suspend operations temporarily. In the suburb of Eldorado do Sul, local hero Daniel Farias used his tractor to evacuate numerous families, demonstrating the community’s resilience amidst tragedy.
