Germany’s Interior Minister Nancy Fezer and the interior ministers of the country’s 16 federal states have stated their desire to tighten laws to protect politicians and their assistants during elections from politically motivated violence, according to DW.

During a conference on Tuesday, the interior ministers supported parliamentary initiatives from Saxony and Bavaria to increase penalties for physical assaults and attacks.

Michael Stübgen, the Interior Minister of the northeastern state of Brandenburg, who chaired the conference, “strongly condemned” the recent attacks that occurred over the weekend, stating that the current legislation no longer reflects the threat faced by those actively involved in politics.

Recently in Germany, three individuals were identified as likely accomplices in a serious attack on the leading candidate of the Social Democratic Party of Germany in the European elections, Matthias Ekke.
