Japan and Germany plan to conduct their first joint training of ground forces next year. This was announced by the German Defense Minister Boris Pistorius.

According to Pistorius, such intentions are associated with China’s increasing military presence in the Indo-Pacific region and territorial claims in the South China Sea. The minister noted that China continues to deploy coast guard, maritime militia, as well as maritime and air forces in the relevant waters to support its claims.

It was emphasized that Germany will uphold the rules-based international order. Pistorius also added that the start of Russia’s war against Ukraine was a “wake-up call” and a “turning point” for his country.
