Tourism officials from the Gulf Cooperation Council (GCC) are urging for a collaborative effort to synchronize major events across the member states. This proposal comes ahead of the imminent launch of a unified visa program for the six-nation bloc, aiming to bolster tourism in the region.
A unified visa system would streamline the application process for tourists, allowing them to seamlessly visit all GCC countries with a single visa. This initiative, coupled with strategic scheduling of mega-events, is envisioned to extend tourist stays and create a more holistic travel experience within the GCC.
“By coordinating on major events collectively, the Gulf region could attract a wider range of tourists for extended stays, ” said Khalid Al Midfa, chairman of Sharjah Commerce and Tourism Development Authority, during a panel session at the Arabian Travel Market event in Dubai.
This approach would present the GCC as a unified tourist destination, showcasing the diverse offerings of each member state. Tourists would be incentivized to explore the region’s historical landmarks, cultural events, and natural wonders, all under the convenience of a single visa.
The GCC comprises Bahrain, Kuwait, Oman, Qatar, Saudi Arabia, and the United Arab Emirates. Each nation boasts a distinct tourism profile, with Saudi Arabia focusing on religious and cultural tourism, the UAE attracting luxury travelers with its world-class infrastructure, and Oman promoting its rich heritage and pristine natural beauty.
A strategic event calendar would allow tourists to combine these experiences seamlessly. For instance, a tourist could attend a music festival in Dubai and then travel to Oman for a traditional dhow boat cruise, all within the validity period of a single visa.
This collaboration would also benefit event organizers. By avoiding scheduling conflicts, they could potentially attract a larger pool of attendees and create a more vibrant regional event scene. Imagine a scenario where a prestigious film festival is held in Qatar, followed by a renowned art exhibition in Bahrain – this would entice art and culture enthusiasts to embark on a multi-country GCC tour.
Implementing a unified event calendar presents logistical challenges. The GCC nations would need to establish a central coordinating body to devise a strategic plan.
