Polish Prime Minister Donald Tusk has urged the European Union to allocate no less than 100 billion euros for defense and establish a common missile defense system. He made this statement during a speech at an economic conference in the city of Katowice.

Tusk noted that the long debates on strengthening the EU’s defense capabilities should be concluded with a decision in the near future.

“Many funds, wisely spent on the security of Europe, will keep war away from European borders for a long time. Perhaps forever,” the Polish Prime Minister pointed out.

In turn, President of the European Commission Ursula von der Leyen, who also participated in the event, noted that the EU should “rebuild, replenish, and transform” its armed forces, supporting Tusk’s call for a joint missile defense system.

Tusk warned that the European region should spend the coming years building up military readiness sufficient to act as a deterrent against potential adversaries. He also called for the bloc to strengthen its external borders.
