Belgian and Dutch students have joined the global outcry against Israel’s military actions in Gaza, staging protests that saw university occupations in Ghent and Amsterdam.

In a synchronized effort, students in Belgium and the Netherlands rallied against Israel’s offensive, mirroring demonstrations erupting across the globe, particularly on US campuses. In Amsterdam, hundreds of students at the University of Amsterdam (UvA) congregated, establishing a camp complete with tents, drum circles, and makeshift barricades. Their demands include the termination of institutional partnerships between UvA, Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (VU), and Israeli institutions.

While UvA spokesperson voiced tolerance for the daytime protest, they emphasized a firm stance against overnight stays, threatening to involve law enforcement if necessary.

Meanwhile, in Ghent, approximately 100 students occupied parts of Ghent University (UGent), amplifying their dissent against Israel’s actions. Social media footage captured their chants echoing through university buildings, calling for an end to the occupation.

Support for the protest has extended beyond student circles, with UGent employees and professors issuing an open letter condemning the university’s continued research collaboration with Israeli entities.

In response, Rik Van de Walle, the rector of Ghent University, emphasized the institution’s commitment to human rights by subjecting collaborative partners to scrutiny. While UGent typically does not sanction building occupations, they acknowledged a set of protocols governing such situations.

The Ghent University students have declared their intent to continue the protest until May 8th, asserting their determination to amplify their voices against the ongoing conflict in Gaza.
