Germany’s Federal Minister of Education, Bettina Stark-Watzinger, has urged German universities to vigorously oppose anti-Semitism, according to DW.

“The scale of hatred towards Israel and Jews at many Western universities is unbearable. The mass disturbances of the past few days should serve as a reminder and a warning to us,” she said.

According to Stark-Watzinger, university leadership should enforce internal regulations and take disciplinary action against violators, and in particularly serious cases, expulsion from the university may be considered.

In turn, the Central Council of Jews in Germany warned against anti-Semitic protests similar to those that have been ongoing in American universities for several months.

Jewish students in Germany have been facing manifestations of anti-Semitism for many months, depriving them of a sense of security, noted Schuster.

In Schuster’s opinion, universities “often do not recognize or know how to respond to anti-Semitic incidents among students and faculty, and lack the proper tools to take action against the driving forces of this development.”
