At least 39 people have died and 68 are reported missing as a result of flooding in the state of Rio Grande do Sul in southern Brazil, according to CNN Brasil.

More than 350,000 people have been affected by the natural disaster. Tens of thousands of local residents have left their homes and are in shelters. In the state capital of Porto Alegre, on May 3rd, one of the locks of Lake Guaíba burst, threatening to flood areas in the north of the city.

According to the Brazilian Geological Service, the flooding is the worst since 1941, with water levels in several cities being the highest recorded in nearly 150 years of observation.
