A women’s college basketball player native to Utah is coming home.
Kemery Martin, who played for Corner Canyon and Alta high schools and the Utah Utes, announced her commitment to BYU on Friday. She has one more year of college eligibility.
“Kemery is a three-level scorer that will add depth and experience to our young roster,” coach Amber Whiting said in a statement. “She has the ability to shoot it from deep, put it on the deck, get to the rim and she has a high basketball IQ, which helps her create for her teammates as well. She is a great fit for our team and will make an immediate impact through her experience and leadership.”
Martin joins a Cougars squad in need of replacing up to six scholarships after Rose Bubakar and Ali’a Matavao entered the transfer portal, Lauren Gustin and Kaylee Smiler graduated, and Kailey Woolston and McKinley Willardson were called to church missions.
Martin most recently played for Cal. She started all 30 games in the 2022-23 season, but her playing time and production fell last season. She played 64 games over two seasons, and averaged 8.5 points, 3.0 rebounds and 1.7 assists. She shot 35.1% from the 3-point line.
Martin, who won the Gatorade Utah Player of the Year award for girls’ basketball in 2019, started her collegiate career at the University of Utah in 2019. Before transferring to Cal, she played 58 games and averaged 6.6 points, 1.3 assists and 1.7 rebounds. She shot 35.5% from the field, and 28.6% from the 3-point line.
Martin is the fourth player the Cougars have added this offseason. Marya Hudgings, formerly of Santa Clara, committed to BYU earlier this month. Hattie Ogden, who last played at Buffalo, also committed this month. They’ll be juniors.
