NYPD’s crackdown on campus protests: Letters to the Editor — May 4, 2024

The Issue: The NYPD arrests of dozens of pro-Palestine protesters at Columbia University this week.

Hooray for New York City’s Finest on clearing the encampments (“Fail Columbia,” May 1).

As I listen to interviews with these students, I realize these revered centers of learning are producing sheeple instead of leaders. One after another, they seem utterly unclear about why they are protesting.

A suggestion would be to watch the Oct. 7 video of Hamas terrorists swooping into the music festival and committing horrific atrocities and taking hostages.

Consider the destruction and violence that occurred in taking over Hamilton Hall. Humanitarians? I don’t think so.

The fact that the American flag was replaced with a Palestinian flag is degrading and a dishonor to all patriotic Americans.

How dare these students insult the men and women who fought and died to give them that privilege by removing our flag and replacing it with that of another country.

These students should be expelled, not suspended. They could use their newfound free time to brush up on their history lessons, as it’s obvious they learned nothing in that class the first time around.

The crackdown on student-led Gaza solidarity encampments on US campuses is deeply concerning. These protests — advocating for Palestinian rights and condemning Israeli aggression — have been unjustly labeled as antisemitic. As someone who values free speech and peaceful protest, I find this characterization both misleading and dangerous.

It is imperative that universities uphold principles of free expression and refrain from silencing voices.

The Issue: A significant reported increase in crime in Central Park compared to last year’s data.

This week, there were four muggings in Central Park, and crime has increased by over 350% compared to last year (“NYers adjust Central Pk. habits due to crime,” May 1).

Once again people are fearing for their safety. The dedicated NYPD has its work cut out for it as it continues to strive to reduce crime.

Every citizen in this city has the right to feel safe. More and more New Yorkers are packing their bags and heading out of what is becoming “Dodge City.” This is a very sad fact indeed.

When I watch TV, the main networks show how peaceful and relaxing Central Park appears, and none could never imagine that thuggery is again taking place there.

Undoubtedly, it occurs after dark, and with summer coming those assaults will likely only increase.

I think the Central Park assaults are a result of Gov. Hochul’s campaign to favor criminals. One of her first acts as governor was to pass her new “gun safety” law.

Hochul’s law limited pistol-permit holders from carrying a concealed weapon.

Of course, the law did nothing to prevent criminals with illegal guns from preying on the rest of us.
