What was new and worth watching over the last month

Missed out on our list last week? Here’s a little recap on what to watch in May.

The Atypical Family – May 4, Netflix

  • Release date: May 4, 2024
  • Genre: Action, Drama, Fantasy
  • Rating: N.A.
  • Director: Jo Hyun-tak

This Korean fantasy romance series follows the struggling Bok family, who all possess supernatural abilities but have lost control over their powers due to chronic illnesses. The family’s life takes an unexpected turn when they cross paths with the mysterious Do Da-hae, a woman with her own secret abilities.

The eldest son Gwi-ju, played by Jang Ki-yong, once had the power to time travel but is now battling depression. His sister Dong-hee can fly, while their mother Man-heum suffers from insomnia due to her precognitive dreams.

As the family grapples with their challenges, Da-hae’s arrival promises to shake things up in ways none of them could have predicted. With a mix of fantasy, family dynamics, and romance, The Atypical Family looks to be a fresh and intriguing addition to the Korean drama landscape.

Bodkin – May 9, Netflix

  • Genre: Comedy, Drama, Thriller
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Jez Scharf
  • Cast: Siobhán Cullen, Robyn Cara, Chris Walley

What if the cold case isn’t cold? Watch this trio of podcasters wander into something interesting, and something dangerous on this show on Netflix. This darkly comedic thriller follows a ragtag trio of podcasters who travel to a remote Irish village to investigate the cold case disappearance of a local family.

However, they soon find themselves in over their heads as they uncover a complex web of secrets and scandals that the eccentric townsfolk would rather stay buried.

Led by a charming but self-involved American host, his disillusioned researcher, and an eager but inexperienced intern, the podcasting team must navigate thorny personalities if they hope to crack the case. But the deeper they dig, the more dangerous and absurd the investigation becomes.

With quirky characters, biting wit, and a compelling mystery at its core, Bodkin promises a unique spin on the true crime genre. Honestly, I’d say this show is a perfect combination of Stranger Things and Only Murders in the Building — and how can you go wrong with that?

Blood of Zeus (Season 2) – May 10, Netflix

  • Release date: May 10, 2024
  • Genre: Animation, Action, Adventure
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director: Charley Parlapanides
  • Cast: Derek Phillips, Jessica Henwick, Elias Toufexis

The breakout adult animated series returns for a highly anticipated second season. Following the climactic battle for Olympus, the demigod hero Heron finds his world upended once again when a terrifying new threat emerges from the underworld.

With the giants defeated and the gods still reeling from Zeus’s sacrifice, Hades sets his sights on expanding his domain — and he’s not alone. A bitter Seraphim, given new power and purpose, is all too eager to exact vengeance on Heron and the Olympians who wronged him.

To save the world from being overrun by the dead, Heron must unite friends and foes alike, including his newly discovered demi-god siblings. But trust is in short supply, and the young hero soon learns that the most treacherous battles are often fought within. Bigger stakes, bolder action, and a rich mythological tapestry promise to make Blood of Zeus’s sophomore outing just as electrifying as the first.

Clarkson’s Farm (Season 3) – May 3, Amazon Prime

  • Release date: May 3, 2024
  • Genre: Documentary, Comedy
  • Rating: TV-PG
  • Director: Gavin Whitehead
  • Cast: Jeremy Clarkson, Kaleb Cooper, Charlie Ireland

Britain’s most entertaining amateur farmer returns in this hugely popular documentary series. With his restaurant dreams dashed and his land ravaged by drought and local red tape, Jeremy Clarkson must get creative to keep Diddly Squat Farm afloat.

His solution? Make Kaleb the farm manager and engage in a good-natured rivalry to see who can turn the biggest profit.

But Clarkson’s attempts at diversification — from beekeeping to truffle-hunting — only seem to create more chaos, while Kaleb’s green thumb and common sense are pushed to the brink by his boss’s harebrained schemes.

Add in Gerald’s cancer battle, Lisa and Charlie’s ongoing clashes with the council, and the general mayhem of farm life, and it’s clear that Clarkson will need more than his bulldozer and big ideas to succeed. As hilarious as it is heartfelt, this season proves that when the going gets tough, there’s still nowhere Jeremy would rather be than in the Cotswolds.

Zillow Gone Wild – May 3, Max

  • Release date: May 3, 2024
  • Genre: Documentary
  • Rating: TV-PG
  • Director: Samir Mezrahi
  • Cast: Jack McBrayer

From a Kansas City house shaped like a UFO to a Las Vegas pirates’ paradise complete with a secret tavern, Zillow Gone Wild showcases properties that defy convention and sometimes (most times, actually) even logic.

Step inside an underground bunker-turned-residence in Nebraska, marvel at the audacious gold accents of the “Saxophone House” in California and explore architectural wonders that push the boundaries of what we call home.

Based on the wildly popular social media accounts by Samir Mezrahi, the series celebrates creativity, eccentricity, and the bold spirit of homeowners who dare to be different. With McBrayer as your guide, get ready to laugh, gasp, and maybe even find inspiration for your own dream abode, no matter how crazy it might be.

Oh and, in the end, only one of these extraordinary properties will be crowned America’s “wildest,” with a chance for viewers to win $25,000 for guessing the winner.

Knuckles – April 27, Paramount Plus

Sonic has had a ton of shows over the years, but up until now they have all been animated affairs. The spin-off Knuckles represents the first Sega live-action TV series and while it’s far from a perfect experience, fans of the movies will undoubtedly find this series a lot of fun.

Knuckles teams up with the bumbling cop Wade to teach him to be a warrior as he prepares for a major bowling tournament and an ultimate showdown with his estranged father. My entire family enjoyed this one a lot, just be aware that some of the episodes get a bit trippy and had me thinking “What am I watching?” Overall though, this was a lot of fun.

  • Years active: 2024 (Ongoing)
  • Genre: Family
  • Rating: TV-PG
  • Director:  Jeff Fowler

Frankly Speaking – May 1, Netflix

After a freak accident, 33-year-old Song Ki-baek begins to develop a disorder that causes him to speak his mind without really thinking about what he’s saying. This South Korean language (there are sub-titles) series is both a comedy, romance, and drama all in one. The storyline also sort of reminds me of the movie Liar, Liar, but maybe that’s just me. You can catch the first few episodes now, with two new episodes launching every Wednesday and Thursday into early June.

  • Years active: 2024 (Ongoing)
  • Genre: Comedy, Romance
  • Rating: 13+

Paramount’s Behind the Music, Season 2 – May 2, Paramount Plus

Behind the Music is a well-known documentary series that ran from 1997 to 2014 on VH1. If you’re a child of the 90s like myself, odds are you’ve seen at least a few episodes here and there. Back in 2021, the series was finally rebooted and now it’s back for a second season as an exclusive on Paramount Plus. This time we’ll be looking at Trace Adkins, among others.

  • Years active: 2021 – 2024 (Ongoing)
  • Genre: Documentary
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Creators: Bruce Gillmer, Jennifer Demme, Michael Maniaci

Hacks, Season 3 – May 2, Max

Deborah is a Las Vegas stand-up comedy legend and more than a little bit of a diva. Now she must reinvent herself in order to continue to keep her act at the Palmetto Casino. At least that was the basic premise of season 1. The show has changed a lot since then, but you can catch all three seasons now on Max.

  • Years active: 2021 – Ongoing
  • Genre: comedy, drama
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Creators:  Lucia Aniello, Paul W. Downs, Jen Statsky
  • Cast: Jean Smart, Hannah Einbinder, Carl Clemons-Hopkins

Dead Boy Detectives – April 25, Netflix

The Dead Boy Detective Agency isn’t your typical detective group, as it’s run by two teenage ghosts who were born decades apart and have dedicated their afterlives to solving the mysteries of other ghosts. Along the way, they help a variety of spirits that are having trouble letting go, many of whom have walked the Earth for centuries. Of course, it’s a little hard to investigate the living world when you’re dead, which leads the boys to team up with a psychic.

  • Years active: 2024 (Ongoing)
  • Genre: horror/comedy/drama
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Creators:  Steve Yockey, Beth Schwartz
  • Cast: George Rexstrew, Jayden Revri, Lukas Gage

The Big Door Prize, Season 2 – April 24, Apple TV Plus

The Big Door Prize is back for a second season! As a recap, the series is set in a small, sleepy town that is rocked to its core when the general store suddenly gets a mysterious new machine called Morphos, which supposedly can analyze your potential and help set you on the right path. No one knows exactly where it came from, but soon it begins to change the town in ways no one could have expected. Season 2 picks up where the last one left off, this time telling the town’s residents that they are ready for the next step. What exactly is that step? That’s the million-dollar question.

  • Years active: 2023 – Ongoing
  • Genre: Comedy
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Creator:  David West Read
  • Cast: Josh Segarra, Gabrielle Dennis, Djouliet Amara

Deliver Me – April 24, Netflix

Based on a Swedish book by the same name, Deliver Me tells the story of two best friends in Sweden who live very different lives. One lives a life of privilege on the surface but is neglected in reality, while the other is very poor and yet has a safe, loving home. Despite their different backgrounds, both are recruited as drug runners. Soon the two want out of the life, but find it’s much harder to get out than it was to get in.

  • Years active: 2024 (Ongoing)
  • Genre: Thriller/Drama
  • Rating: TV-MA
  • Director:  Anna Zackrisson
  • Cast: Yasir Hassan, Ollie Strand, Yusra Warsama

Wonderful World – April 24, Hulu

Wonderful World centers on a psychology professor whose life falls apart after her son dies suddenly due to a hit-and-run. After the case falls through she decides to seek vengeance on her own. Be aware this is a South Korean drama and so it is in Korean, though there are English subtitles.
