An experimental orange and white F-16 fighter jet took to the skies, piloted not by a human, but by artificial intelligence. Air Force Secretary Frank Kendall observed the event, Associated Press reported.

The test, conducted at Edwards Air Force Base, represents a major milestone in the Air Force’s integration of AI into aerial combat. Plans are underway for a fleet of over 1,000 unmanned AI-enabled warplanes by 2028, signaling the military’s commitment to this technology.

Kendall emphasized the critical importance of AI in modern air combat, citing security concerns and the necessity of staying ahead in technological advancements. The flight was kept classified until its completion due to operational security considerations, with limited media access granted for observation.
