A court in Belgium has granted parole to 67-year-old Ivo Poppe, who was sentenced to 27 years in prison in 2018 for administering euthanasia to at least ten people, including his own mother, reports Belga.

According to the agency, Poppe was allowed to leave prison on parole for medical reasons. According to his lawyer, the convicted man is suffering from prostate cancer but did not receive adequate treatment in prison.

The Belgian press has dubbed Poppe the “death deacon”. Working first as a nurse and then as a deacon at the Sacred Heart Hospital in Menen, West Flanders, the man administered lethal injections to elderly patients by injecting them with insulin or air.

During the investigation, Poppe admitted to also administering lethal injections to his mother, grandparents, stepfather, and cousins. Currently, he has been released from prison and placed in a hospital for treatment.
