Biden criticizes Japan and India on immigration, labels them “xenophobic”

Addressing a largely Asian American donor audience, Biden emphasized the importance of immigration to America’s economic vitality. He asserted that countries like China, Japan, Russia, and India struggle economically due to their aversion to immigrants, contrasting them with the United States, which he portrayed as strengthened by immigrant contributions.

While Biden’s comments provoked no immediate response from the Japanese or Indian governments, White House spokesperson John Kirby clarified that Biden’s remarks aimed to underscore the U.S. commitment to immigration and alliances. He emphasized Biden’s appreciation for alliances and partnerships with Japan and India on various issues beyond security concerns.

Biden’s remarks coincided with the start of Asian American and Pacific Islander Heritage Month, underlining his administration’s engagement with diverse communities. The president was introduced at the fundraiser by Senator Tammy Duckworth, highlighting the representation of Asian American voices in his reelection campaign.

Japan, grappling with a shrinking population, faces demographic challenges despite recent policy shifts to attract foreign workers. India, on the other hand, boasts a burgeoning population, albeit with controversial citizenship laws that fast-track naturalization for certain religious groups while excluding Muslims.
