The United Arab Emirates faced disruptions in flight operations to Dubai as heavy rains swept through the region, marking the second instance of significant rainfall within a month. Airport authorities reported the cancellation and diversion of several flights on Thursday, with five inbound flights redirected overnight and nine arrivals along with four departures cancelled, as reported by AP.

In April, the UAE witnessed unprecedented rainfall, resulting in severe thunderstorms that caused flooding across major highways and Dubai International Airport. This disruption, occurring in the world’s busiest airport for international travel and a vital hub for Emirates Airlines, necessitated significant efforts to clear water from the airport grounds using 22 tanker trucks equipped with vacuum pumps.

In anticipation of Thursday’s rain, authorities issued advisories urging residents to remain indoors, prompting remote work arrangements and online schooling for students.

While the rainfall on Thursday did not lead to major incidents or flooding, authorities remained vigilant, issuing preemptive warnings and implementing precautionary measures.

The previous bout of flooding overwhelmed the UAE’s drainage infrastructure, inundating neighborhoods, business hubs, and segments of the Sheikh Zayed Highway connecting Dubai and Abu Dhabi. Residents suffered losses as homes were flooded, and numerous vehicles were damaged beyond repair.
