Artists from Universal Music Group, including Taylor Swift, Drake, Adele, Bad Bunny, and Billie Eilish, are set to make a comeback on TikTok as both parties finalize a fresh licensing deal, ending a nearly three-month dispute.

The announcement made on Thursday signals a swift resolution as the two sides swiftly work to restore music by UMG’s artists and songwriters on TikTok. UMG had previously voiced concerns in January, expressing dissatisfaction over compensation for artists and songwriters, AI-related issues, and online safety on TikTok. The standoff led to UMG’s decision to cease licensing content to the platform.

However, the new agreement aims to provide substantial benefits to UMG’s global roster, promising a return of their music to TikTok. TikTok CEO Shou Chew emphasized the importance of music within the platform’s ecosystem and expressed commitment to enhancing value and promotion for UMG’s talents.

Part of the renewed deal includes collaboration on exploring new monetization avenues and supporting UMG’s artists globally through joint campaigns. Additionally, efforts will be made to ensure AI development in the music industry safeguards human artistry and facilitates fair compensation for artists and songwriters.

TikTok pledges to invest in artist-centric tools, such as “Add to Music App” features and enhanced analytics, to empower UMG artists on the platform.

Michael Nash, UMG’s chief digital officer, expressed satisfaction with the renewed partnership, highlighting advancements in commercial opportunities and safeguards for their artists.

However, despite the resolution between TikTok and UMG, uncertainties loom over the platform’s future. President Joe Biden’s recent legislation requiring ByteDance, TikTok’s parent company, to sell to a U.S. owner within a year or face shutdown adds another layer of uncertainty to the situation.
