The European Commission and the Consumer Rights Protection Bodies of the European Union (CRPB) have initiated an investigation against 20 airlines that may be misleading consumers regarding compensation for harmful emissions during flights. This was reported on the European Commission’s portal.

Airlines are suspected of “greenwashing” – an unethical marketing practice where companies claim environmental efforts without evidence. Such practice is considered consumer deception.

The European Commission believes that airlines’ statements regarding compensation for harmful aircraft emissions through climate projects and the use of more environmentally friendly fuels lack scientific basis and may be considered “greenwashing”.

Airlines have been sent letters demanding that they confirm their information regarding emissions compensation with scientific evidence within 30 days. Otherwise, sanctions will be applied to the airlines.

The European Commission does not specify which airlines are involved, citing the initial stage of the investigation.
