A new agreement between Germany and Switzerland to combat smuggling has come into effect, according to DPA. It aims to combat terrorism, violent extremism, human trafficking, and arms trading.

The agreement is designed to improve cross-border cooperation in combating smuggling and to strengthen efforts against drivers who evade fines for speeding in Switzerland, provided they have not re-entered the country.

Fines from non-EU countries such as Switzerland or the United Kingdom could not previously be enforced in Germany. The agreement will allow officers from both countries to cross the border in emergency situations and also involves the establishment of liaison offices and joint operational units.

German Interior Minister Nancy Faeser stated that this agreement will enhance cooperation between the police forces of the two countries.
