Yaroslav V. has been convicted in the United States for his involvement in extensive cyberattacks carried out by the notorious hacker group REvil, receiving a sentence of 13 years and seven months in prison. Additionally, he has been ordered to pay approximately 15 million euros in restitution for his participation in over 2500 ransomware attacks, as announced by the US Department of Justice on Wednesday, Spiegel reports.

The 24-year-old Ukrainian, operating under the pseudonym “Rabotnik,” targeted thousands of computers worldwide with the REvil malware, according to investigations. Ransomware attacks encrypt and disable victims’ data, only releasing it upon payment of a ransom. Often, entire corporate networks are infected and temporarily shut down if the victims have not adequately protected themselves.

Ukrainian authorities have cooperated with international law enforcement agencies to apprehend hackers on multiple occasions. Similar investigations or arrests from Russia have not been reported since the onset of the attack on Ukraine.
