In the USA, police shot dead a student who arrived at a local high school with a weapon. The student never made it into the school, but as a precaution, the entire area was closed off, The Guardian reports.

Authorities referred to the student as a minor but did not provide further details about him or specific information about the type of firearm the boy had. It was also not reported whether the student fired at the police.

Since then, students have been reunited with their parents. Some waited for up to five hours until their children were disembarked at a bus storage center in a village about 20 miles southwest of the state capital – Madison.

The high school where the police fired shots will reopen on May 2 and serve as a center for staff and students to receive support. Learning is expected to resume on May 3, according to Principal Steve Salerno.

According to the non-profit organization K-12 School Shooting Database, which tracks such incidents, shootings have become more frequent in American schools in recent years. In 2024, there were at least 115 such incidents. In 82 of them, someone was injured or killed.
