The US State Department expressed serious concern over the adoption of the “foreign agents” law in Georgia, stating that it is a product of Kremlin influence aimed at suppressing critical voices and weakening civil society in the country.

American officials stated that such actions contradict the democratic values that underlie Georgia’s aspirations for membership in the European Union and NATO.

“This law and the anti-Western rhetoric of the ‘Georgian Dream’ have put Georgia on a dangerous path. The statements and actions of the Georgian government are incompatible with the democratic values that underlie EU and NATO membership, thus jeopardizing Georgia’s path to Euro-Atlantic integration,” the statement said.

In its official statement, the State Department emphasized that the adoption of this law and the anti-Western rhetoric recently embraced in Georgia pose a threat to its path to Euro-Atlantic integration. Such actions could seriously undermine the long-term relationship between the USA and Georgia, warned the American agency.
