The collapse of a section of a high-speed highway in China’s Guangdong province has claimed 24 lives, according to China Central Television, citing local authorities.

According to the latest information, 20 cars were found under the debris. A total of 54 people were affected, with 24 confirmed dead. Initially, there were reports of 19 fatalities.

Thirty of the injured were taken to the hospital, but their lives are not in danger, according to the television channel.

The collapse occurred around 02:10 on the highway leading from Guangdong province to Fujian province. The collapsed section measured 17.9 meters in length, with an area of destruction totaling 184.3 square meters.

Rescue efforts at the scene are ongoing, aimed at mitigating the consequences of the tragedy.
