France should limit the use of smartphones and social media by children and teenagers. This was stated by a group of experts advising French President Emmanuel Macron, Reuters reports.

Children under 11 should not have a phone; those under 13 may face restrictions on internet access. Additionally, social media should be closed to children under 15, while teenagers aged 15 to 18 will have limited access only to ethical social networks.

Macron first mentioned the ban on smartphones and social media for children back in January 2024, promising to develop strict legislation. This comes amid concerns from parents, psychologists and politicians worldwide that modern technologies may do more harm than good.

The US Surgeon General stated in 2023 that social media could negatively impact the mental health of children and teenagers. The report also notes that excessive gadget use affects children’s sleep, which is a major factor in obesity and increases anxiety.

Details of the new law and when it might be passed are currently unknown.
