The Philippines lodged accusations against China on Tuesday, alleging harassment and damage to one of its boats in a contentious area of the South China Sea. Manila rebuffed Beijing’s assertion that it had expelled two vessels from the fiercely contested shoal, as reported by Reuters.

The Philippine coast guard asserted that its two vessels maintained their position at the Scarborough Shoal, a crucial area in the South China Sea, but one suffered damage from water cannon used by two Chinese coast guard ships.

“This damage serves as evidence of the forceful water pressure used by the China coast guard in their harassment of the Philippine vessels,” stated Jay Tarriela, spokesperson for the Philippine coast guard.

Despite the incident, the Philippine coast guard affirmed its commitment to continue supporting Filipino fishermen and ensuring their safety.

China’s coast guard asserted that the vessels had been expelled but did not elaborate on the incident. In response, China urged the Philippines to cease provocative actions and respect its sovereignty.

Both China and the Philippines have accused each other of illegal conduct in the Scarborough Shoal, exacerbating diplomatic friction. Efforts to improve communication and management of disputes in the region have faltered, contributing to heightened tensions, especially amid the Philippines’ strengthening ties with the United States.
