England boss Gareth Southgate has been handed a major boost with the news national team managers can pick 26-man squads for this summer’s Euros. Southgate will name his on Tuesday.

Euro 2020 was the first time Uefa allowed countries to name 26 players, to help cope with Covid-19 and manage player welfare after the pandemic led to a condensed 2020-21 season.

Euro 2024 was expected to revert to traditional 23-man squads. However, after being lobbied by national coaches, including Southgate, who are concerned about player burn-out and injury, the national teams competitions committee voted to increase squad sizes from 23 to 26.

This move has handed a Euros lifeline to players such as Marcus Rashford, who was not expected to make it into a 23-man party but could squeeze into a 26-strong England squad.

What is the latest England news?

Luke Shaw is an injury doubt for England’s Euros squad. Erik ten Hag, Shaw’s manager at Manchester United, confirmed that the defender suffered a setback in his recovery from a muscle injury.

Shaw has played just 351 minutes of football so far this year. Shaw’s team-mate, Marcus Rashford, is another player who faces an anxious wait to see if Southgate will pick him on Tuesday.

Rashford played just 15 minutes across England’s recent friendlies against Brazil and Belgium which were the final two games before Southgate names his provisional squad.

Rashford did not get onto the pitch at all against Belgium – even though England were losing – having failed to impress during his cameo against Brazil.

What does England’s new kit look like?

The build-up to England’s Euro 2024 challenge threatened to be overshadowed by a St George’s Cross kit row.

The furore was sparked by kit manufacturer Nike’s decision to alter the English national flag on the back of the new England shirt, swapping out the red and white for blue and purple and provoking apoplexy amongst traditionalists.

Even the Prime Minister, Rishi Sunak, and Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer waded in, suggesting Nike “should not mess” with the St George’s Cross.

An “authentic” version of the new England top costs £124.99 for adults and £119.99 for children while a “stadium” version is £84.99 and £64.99 for children.

A Nike spokesperson said: “The England 2024 home kit disrupts history with a modern take on a classic.

“The trim on the cuffs takes its cues from the training gear worn by England’s 1966 heroes, with a gradient of blues and reds topped with purple. The same colours also feature an interpretation of the flag of St George on the back of the collar.”
